Hi!
I'm Josh Philpott, a student, and applicant of Birmingham Institute of Art and Design.
I applied for the BTEC Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, because I would like the chance to graduate and study BA(Hons) Art and Design, and because of the range of media and techniques this coarse provides that otherwise I may not have had the chance to study.
Here I'll be showing off some of my work for your consideration.
(Not actually strawberry flavoured. May contain nuts.)
One of two pieces which I intended to bring but wouldn't fit in the portfolio folder. Painted as my final for my life drawing course, inspired by Egon Schiele.
Photographic collages inspired by David Hockney. Dining Table is an unfinished version of the final image, attempting to follow Cubist principles of artists I have studied (Hockney, Picasso, Duchamp, Malevich), combining multiple perspectives of an object into one image.
What If Everything Isn't As You Perceive It? ...And Other Existential Questions, 2011, mixed media video
My final piece for Unit 3 Art A-Level concerned my ideas of existential awareness, perception of the world through our different senses and our minds interpretation of them, and how individuals may interpret this sensory information differently and thus we perceive things differently to one another.
The second video is a spectrogram: soundwaves translated into images. For the skull drawing to appear in the soundwaves, the drawing was first synthesised into sound using a program called Coagula. This is the sound in that video. The intention is to represent reality as it is outside of our perceptions of it, represented in the video above.
Photos of my brother in dark and fog at different shutter speeds. V & VI were accidently printed on the wrong side of photographic printing paper, the ink stayed wet for a while. I liked how they made the images appear aged and worn, ghostly in their own right.
